LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team took a major step forward in its quest for a third consecutive ODAC Tournament berth with a 6-3 victory over Randolph Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (8-4, 3-4 ODAC) has moved into a fifth-place tie with Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan thanks to the victory over Randolph (9-7, 1-7).
Leading 2-1 after doubles thanks to 8-2 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3, SU clinched with wins at No. 1, 3 and 6 singles.
After Amy Rapp, who had previously teamed with Melanie Madison to win 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, was forced to retire during her No. 2 singles match, senior Molly Barb put Shenandoah back on top to stay with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dina Velazco in the No. 1 singles match.
Rapp and Barb's classmate, Caitlin Tilton, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to put the Hornets within one victory of the clinch.
Freshman Denise Vollmer got that win in the next match to finish, winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6 to give SU the fifth point.
Madison gave the Hornets their final point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5.
Shenandoah is remains in the Hill City tonight to take on Lynchburg tomorrow in another ODAC matchup.
