WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's tennis team opened up its 2018 spring season Saturday night with an 8-1 non-league victory over Susquehanna University.
Playing indoors at Winchester Country Club, SU (1-0) took two of the three doubles matches before sweeping the singles to take out the River Hawks (5-2).
In doubles, Brett Dubin and Evan Rosenberg got the Hornets on the board with an 8-0 win at No. 3 before Darian Diaz and Bryan Harris put the hosts up 2-0 thanks to a 9-8 (7-3) victory at No. 2.
The top doubles match was also decided by a 9-8 (7-3) score with the River Hawks Alexander Dove and Alexander Cocolas topping Matt Hwang and Zach Frack.
Diaz and Dubin set up Hwang to earn the match clinching point by winning their matches at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively.
Diaz was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 3 over Cocolas put SU up 3-1 with Dubin's 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Ben Ornstein at No. 2 putting the hosts just one point from the win.
Playing No. 1, Hwang took out Dove 6-1, 6-1 to seal the win.
Frack outlasted Seibert in a three set match at No. 4 while Rosenberg and Harris won in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 6 to complete the sweep.
The men are back in action on February 24 with a 7:30 non-league home match versus DII Shepherd.
