Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team split its opening two matches Friday at the Gallaudet Tournament.
Shenandoah (3-2) downed the host Bison, 3-2, in the opening match of the day before falling 3-0 to Lynchburg.
IN BRIEF
The Hornets won that opening match by winning the fourth set, 25-23, and then taking the decisive fifth by a 15-6 count to seal the victory over Gallaudet (0-5).
The Bison had taken a 2-1 lead thanks to 26-24 and 25-20 wins in the first and third sets, respectively. SU was a 25-23 victor in the second.
Coach
Kent Clayberg's club hit a match-best .294 (9-4-17) in the fifth – the Hornets pulled away with a 10-1 rally in the middle of the set that turned a 3-3 score into a 13-4 advantage. The two teams then alternated the final four points of the match to close out the Shenandoah win.
Ashley Thompson had the match-clinching point with a kill off of a
Brooke Wagner assist.
Emily Cheatwood and
Sabrina Semo each had 11 kills for the victors with Kait Poppo adding 10.
Megan Hillyard had 27 of the squad's 50 assists with
Hannah Lien adding 11.
Defensively, the Hornets had 13 blocks and 81 digs. Cheatwood, with seven, led in the former category while
Niki Balestri had 24 digs and Poppo 17.
Shenandoah lost at 15,17 and 11 to Lynchburg in the second match of the day. Stats will be available Saturday morning.
