WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its second straight USA South Conference baseball victory with a 15-3 win over visiting Averett University Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (21-4, 2-3 USA South) jumped all over the Cougars (11-17-1, 2-3) for four runs in the first and two more in the third.
SU, which has posted double-digit hits 17 times and eight times in the last nine games, had 12 of those hits in the first three innings off of AU starter Ben Hildreth (4-4).
Hildreth, who was also victimized by four of the Cougars eight errors on the day, departed after allowing a Josh Simons solo HR and singles by Jon Holcomb and Kevin Brashears to lead off the fourth.
Simons' dinger, his second of the season, caromed off of the Bridgeforth Field scoreboard.
The solo shot was one of two that the Hornets had on the day - freshman Cory Nelson hit a three-run shot in the seventh.
The offense was more than enough for sophomore Greg Van Sickler, who improved to 4-1 on the season with the complete game victory. Van Sickler allowed the three runs (two earned) on 12 hits and struck out eight.
At the plate, Van Sickler had two of the team's 19 hits and drove in a pair of runs.
All nine SU starters had at least one hit with Holcomb, Scott Lambert and Jesse Henry registering three each.
Jake Loye was 4 for 4 for AU.
