For the first time in program history, the Shenandoah Men's Soccer team qualifies for the ODAC Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University made program history this week by qualifying for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference 2021 Men's Soccer Tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2012. 

SU, the tournament's seventh seed, will be traveling to second seeded Lynchburg on Saturday, Oct. 30 for a 2 p.m. quarterfinal matchup.

WHAT TO KNOW

Shenandoah was slated to compete at Lynchburg during the regular season on Oct. 16, but recorded an administrative forfeit due to COVID-19 league protocols. 

Lynchburg owns a 14-2 lifetime record over Shenandoah. SU's two wins over the Lynchburg Hornets came in 1992 and 1998. 

GET TO KNOW THE FIELD 

  • Sophomore Niclas Vavra leads SU in scoring with nine goals which is fourth best in conference standings. 
  • First year Jasson Acosta has tallied five goals for Shenandoah.
  • First year forward, Nathan Yared, has notched seven assists for SU and leads the squad with 23 points, good for second and fourth in conference standings, respectively.
  • Junior Travis Jett has allowed just seven shots past him for a 0.85 goals against average. Jett has 33 saves and three shutouts.  
  • The Shenandoah squad has relied heavily on underclassmen this season as 10 of the 11 projected starters are sophomores or first-year student-athletes. 
  • The back line is held down by sophomores Chris Chaplin and Maynor Menendez, and first-years Matthew D'Lugos and Nicholas Mounkhaty.

SCOUTING LYNCHBURG

  • Luke Mega sits right behind Vavra in conference standings with eight goals. Mega has notched three game-winning goals this season. 
  • Brennan Lagana has found the back of the net six times and dished out five assists for 17 points. 
  • The Lynchburg Hornets have three players with four goals each. 
  • Unlike Shenandoah, Lynchburg has a very experienced team and starts just two underclassmen. 

MEET THE COACHES

  • Shenandoah Head Coach Zack MacDougall is in his third year at the program's helm. He has accumulated a record of 16-24-4 the last three seasons.  
  • This season, MacDougall has led SU to the program's best record since 2004, 8-8-2, and the team's first appearance in the ODAC post-season tournament since Shenandoah joined the league in 2012. 
  • Chris Yeager is in his 20th season at Lynchburg, has amassed a record of 228-113-47.
  • Yeager has been named ODAC Coach of the Year six times and the National Coach of the Year in 2010.
