Men's Soccer Wins OT Thriller

Yared Scores Golden Goal Versus Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team defeated Southern Virginia 3-2 in an overtime thriller in Wednesday night's non-conference matchup.

First-year Nathan Yared scored with 14 seconds remaining in the first sudden victory overtime period to give the Hornets (4-2) the win over Southern Virginia (1-5).

IN BRIEF

After a scoreless opening hour, Southern Virginia (1-5) and the Hornets (4-2) found the back of the net a combined four times in the last thirty minutes of regulation, sending the contest into OT.

The Knights put themselves on the board first and SU was able to tie the game 15 minutes later.

In the 81st minute, SVU scored off a free kick and hoped to have secured a win for the hosts, but the Hornets were able to retaliate just 30 seconds later to send it into overtime.

Connor Robles set up Yared for the golden goal with a perfect cross into the middle of the box, where Yared volleyed it past the Knights keeper for the game-winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED

61' | Warren Moss sliced through the Hornets' back line to put the hosts on the board first.
76' | A Cesar Orellana corner found Niclas Vavra, his header made its way into the top-right corner to tie the game up 1-1.
81' | Kohl Simmons took a free kick from 40 yards out putting Peysen Webster in a position to challenge SU goalkeeper, Dylan Johnson, at the top of the box. Webster's header made contact before Johnson was able to punch the ball out of traffic.
82' | Shenandoah tied the game up just moments later when first-year Jasson Acosta picked up a loose ball off a broken play. Acosta's shot hit the left post and found the opposite side of the goal.
100' | Robles received a through-pass from Acosta and sent a right-footed cross into the center of the box, Yared's volley went to the opposite corner, over the head of SVU's keeper, to win the game.
