WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's and women's indoor track & field teams returned to the track Sunday by winning both the men's and women's team competitions at the Kaye and JJ Smith Invitational.
Â
Hosting the third annual event in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center, SU had ten total wins in its first competition of the new year on its way to the two team titles.
Â
IN BRIEF
The SU men, with 129 points, bested Eastern Mennonite by 39 points. The Hornet women had 139 points to outdistance runner-up Stevenson by 40 points.
The men had five of the eight victories with
Wyatt Schannauer posting a first and a second in the shot put and weight throw, respectively.
Â
Schannauer had 13.55 shot put to win that event and was second to teammate
Tucker Kindig in the weight. Kindig had a 15.96 meter toss to 14.40 for Schannauer.
Â
William Crowder won the 60 meter dash with a 6.96 final; he had 6.98 seconds to win his preliminary heat as well.
Miles Moore ran a 22.67 200 meter to place first.Â
Â
SU went 1-2 in the 60 meter hurdles with
Kyle Holliday winning it at 9.11 seconds. He bested
Matthew Klocke by .06.
Â
The final men's win came in dramatic fashion in the 4 x 800 relay. Down by nearly ½ a lap when he took the baton, anchorman
Jeremy Allinger made up that gap in the initial 400 meters of his leg. The Shenandoah 'B' team, anchored by
Elias McGhie, then took the advantage on the penultimate lap and held it until the final 10 meters when Allinger was able to just push past McGhee at the tape.
Â
The SU 'A' team of
Ethan Harrower,
Ryan Coffelt,
Caleb Fargo, and Allinger got the win by an 8:45.06, just .05 in front of the 'B' squad.
Â
The women's four wins came in the 800 meters, shot put, 4 x 400 relay, and 4 x 800 relay.
Â
First-year
Madison Gray was the victor in the 800, besting a 12-woman field with a 2:30.29. She was more than 10 seconds in front of the runner-up finisher.
Â
In the shot put,
Jessica Rendfrey led a 1-2-3-6-7 finish for the Hornets with a 10.91 meter toss. The new personal record came on her second of six throws.
Â
Kiara Felston was second and
Katya Hoover third in that event.
In the 4 x 400,
Alexis Hubbard,
Mackenzie Plowman,
Emma Nicely, and Gray won the event with a time of 4:24:38.Â
In the last relay of the evening, Gray anchored a 10.25.05 showing that won the 4 x 800 by almost 34 seconds.
Makenna Thrush,
Madeline Lotts, and
Erin Atkinson ran the initial three legs of that race.
Â
The women also had three runner-up finishes in addition to Felston's showing in the shot. Â Atkinson had one in the 3000 meters,
Kaitlin Measell in long jump, and Felston earned a second one with her weight throw finish.
