Loy Sets School Record at Seventh Annual Kaye & JJ Smith Invitational

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University track and field programs hosted the seventh annual Kaye & JJ Smith Invitational on Sunday at home in an event featuring five other schools. Kaitlyn Loy broke the school record for women's pole vault at the meet, while three other events saw program top 10 performances.

Loy's record-breaking performance was a height of 2.60m, which surpasses the previous school record of 2.30m, which was set in 2023 at the home December meet.

Molly Donaldson, competing in her first meet, won the women's shot put at the end of the afternoon with a mark of 11.51m. The throw put her fourth all-time for the Hornets. This came after the first-year placed eighth in the women's weight throw, as teammate Jillian Taylor placed fifth in the weight throw.

Fellow first-year Ruth McGhee moved into the top 10 of the program's record book in the women's 60m and the 200m. McGhee ran an 8.10 in the prelims of the 60m, which puts her fourth all-time. In the finals, the first-year finished eighth with a 8.31 second showing. In the 200m, McGhee is now seventh all-time for the Hornets, running a 27.51, earning fourth in the race.

Brayden Shotwell finished second in the men's 3,000m with a time of 9:14.00, which breaks his previous personal best by 0.15 seconds and puts him 10th all-time for the SU men. Will Ashley, Ethan Beaugez, Sebastian Berrios, John Buckley, Isaac Clarke, Noah Godfrey, Nathan Lee, Brenden Maloy, and Jack Micco also set PRs in the race.

The Hornets won the distance medley relay on both the men's and women's sides during the meet. On the men's side, the team of Lee, Shotwell, Wyatt Newcome, and Roman Bernard won with a time of 10:59.08. The women's squad of McGhee, Amy Oleksy, Grace Semow, and Maddy Chorney crossed the line at 13:19.75 to win the event.

Throughout the meet, a total of 34 personal records were broken by the Hornets, with 24 top-five finishes combined on both sides.
