Track and Field Opens Season with SU Holiday Kickoff Open

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University indoor track and field teams began their 2025-26 season on Sunday by hosting the SU Holiday Kickoff Open, with the men placing fourth and the women earning sixth.

The day was highlighted by Maddy Chorney winning the women's mile, 26 personal records across the two teams, and seven program 10-top performances.

FIELD RECAP

First-year Zachary Sheehan placed second in the men's triple jump with a distance of 13.27m, which is fourth all-time for the SU men. Prior to the triple jump, Sheehan had an eighth all-time best performance for SU with a mark of 6.24m in the long jump.

Elaina Ramos, also a first-year student, entered the women's program record book with top-10 performances in the triple jump and long jump. Ramos hit 10.19m in the triple jump, which is third best all-time, and became sixth all-time for the long jump with a leap of 4.67m.

In the men's weight throw, Grady Speer had the best finish for the Hornets, placing third at 13.07m. Brennan Hall (12.54m) and Luke Jacobs (11.96m) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, with Sawyer Paine (7.10m) rounding out the men in 13th. The four each set PRs in the weight throw and shot put.

Jillian Taylor, the only thrower on the women's side for SU, tossed a mark of 12.03m in the weight throw, taking seventh place.

Mekhi Mims was the only Hornet to compete in the high jump and placed third, clearing 1.83m.

TRACK RECAP

Chorney had the best finish of the day for SU, placing first in the women's mile, crossing the finish line at 5:27.11, setting a PR. Cora Helman also set a PR in the event at 6:00.08, placing sixth.

Myah Powell-Utley was the only other woman to run for the Hornets, placing seventh in the 200m and earning 12th in the 60m, while set a personal best in each event.

For the men, Will Ashley earned the 10th-best all-time mark in the 5,000m at 16:10.35. Nathan Lee (16:20.89) and Brenden Maloy (16:55.21) each set PRs, finishing fifth and ninth, respectively.

Roman Bernard ran a third-place finish in the men's 800m, running a 2:02.33 in his first career race. 

Bernard, Sheehan, Lee, and Wyatt Newcome teamed up to run in the men's 4x400m relay and finished third, coming just seconds shy of the program's record with a time of 3:31.30.

Bryce Scholz (9:54.29), Tyler Mullen (9:58.70), and Theo Beyer (10:28.80) all set PRs in the men's 3k, while Demorris Eubanks set a PR in the men's 60m and 200m events.

UP NEXT

The Hornets will take a break from competition for the holidays before returning for their January 11th home meet, the Kaye & JJ Smith Invitational.
