Captains Slip Past Hockey

No. 13 Hornets Fall, 2-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – No. 13 Shenandoah University saw its 12-match field hockey winning streak come to an end Wednesday evening with a 2-0 non-league loss at Christopher Newport.

Christopher Newport (10-3) scored one goal in each half to down the Hornets (12-1) in the first meeting between the two programs since 2013.

IN BRIEF
The win for the Captains is their second over a ranked opponent this season. CNU previously defeated then No. 17 Lynchburg, 2-1, on Oct. 2.

The hosts scored the game's initial goal at 24:06 when Maddison Steele gathered up a deflected pass just outside the circle, took three steps inside the circle and ripped her shot to the right of Shenandoah goalkeeper Taylor Swann.

The visitors dominated possession in the third, taking all of five of the quarter's shots and all three corners awarded, but were turned away each time by Captains goalie Lily Kerr.

In the fourth, the action went more end-to-end with the CNU defense thwarting a potential game-tying 2-on-1 with seven minutes remaining and then generating a penalty stroke opportunity two minutes later.

Marcella Sabbagh took that stroke and slipped her shot just inside the right post to give the Captains the two-goal advantage.

BY THE NUMBERS
Shenandoah outshot Christopher Newport, 17-14, including 15-9 on goal.  CNU had a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Swann had seven saves for the Hornets with Kerr making 15 stops for the Captains.
