Men's Hoops Sinks Apprentice

Hornets Down Shipbuilders, 63-58, for First Win of Doyle Era

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball program defeated Newport News Apprentice, 63-58, Thursday night to give new head coach Nick Doyle his first win as the Hornets leader.

Shenandoah (1-1) got the win for Doyle as Binwi Bihai drained a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left to finally put away the Shipbuilders (1-1).

IN BRIEF
Bihai's '3', from the right wing, gave the Hornets a four-point, 59-55, lead and put Apprentice in a spot in which they had to foul.

SU went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe in the final nine seconds, including converting its one chance following a Builders' technical foul, to ice a contest that had nine ties and 12 lead changes.

With 2:45 remaining, the score was tied for the ninth and final time at 55-55 following an Alvin Hawkins layup for the visitors. Malik Jordan hit 1 of 2 from the line 78 seconds later and SU would hold that lead for the remainder of the contest.

Apprentice, which shot 32 percent (23-of-72) for the game, missed six of its final seven shots from the field following Jordan's free throw. The Builders were also 1 of 22 from beyond the arc (5 percent) for the contest.

A Davion Roberts '3' in the final minute of the first half helped SU take a 27-24 lead into the locker room after a back-and-forth 20 minutes.

The teams exchanged the lead four times and saw the game tied at the 7-7, 10-10, and 12-12 before SU closed the half on a 15-12 run. The Hornets defense held the Builders to just 24.2% (8 for 33) from the field and 0 for 11 from 3-point-land in the frame.

Shenandoah wrapped up the game shooting 50% in the final eight minutes of the win, while holding Apprentice to 33.3% in the same duration.

Roberts got a double-double in the win with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordan led the squad with five assists. Jordan and Roberts partnered with Landon Russ on defense to post three steals each.

SU scored 13 points off of 14 Apprentice turnovers.
