WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned a measure of revenge Saturday in a 59-35 non-league victory over Southern Virginia.
In a rematch of a 2022 NCAA Tournament first round game, Shenandoah (2-0) scored the initial 20 points of the game Saturday and never looked back versus the Knights (1-1).
IN BRIEF
The Hornets led wire-to-wire as junior
Madisen Kimble hit a jumper 36 seconds in to give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Southern Virginia, which shot just 21 percent (12 for 56) for the game, dug itself a hole early by missing its first 15 shots from the field and not getting its initial field goal of the game until the 8:40 mark of the second.
Shenandoah held a 20-1 lead when SVU got that Emma Camden jumper, and held that advantage throughout. The Hornets lead, which grew to 28 points by the 5:35 mark of the third, never dipped below 15 points and remained at least 22 points for the entirety of the second half.
Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club shot 53 percent (9 of 17) in the opening stanza to build that 20-1 lead and was 23 of 57 (40 percent) from the field for the game.
The two teams split 70 rebounds while Shenandoah scored 16 points off of 28 SVU turnovers and only allowed the Knights six points off of 23 turnovers.
Kimble led all players with 19 points with first-year
Emily Williams adding 18 and sophomore
Terese Greene 10. Williams, with nine rebounds, just missed a double-double.
