Women's Hoops Dominates Goucher

Hornets Win, 80-26

TOWSON, Md. - The defending ODAC champion Shenandoah University women's basketball team opened its 2022-23 season Tuesday night with a dominating, 80-26, non-league road victory over Goucher College.

Shenandoah (1-0) won its sixth straight over the Gophers (0-1) by scoring 19 of the initial 21 points of the game and never looking back.

IN BRIEF
The Hornets held Goucher to single digit scoring in each of the first three quarters and did not let their hosts reach the 10-point mark until 6:41 remained in the third.

At this point, SU held a 43-point (53-10) lead and 14 women had played at least one minute for the Hornets.

Shenandoah shot an amazing 73 percent (11 of 15) in the opening stanza as it took a 26-4 lead. In the second, a quarter in which Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club scored 21 of the 25 points, SU still shot 47 percent (8 of 17).

The Hornets shot 54 percent for the game after making 14 of 29 shots over the final 20 minutes.

Aside from a tying bucket 53 seconds in for the Gophers, Shenandoah led throughout.

No starter played more than 27 minutes and the Hornets leading scorer, sophomore Terese Greene, put up 19 points in just 15 minutes of action. First-year Emily Williams, the woman who played a team-high 27 minutes, added 16 points along with a team-high eight rebounds.

Madisen Kimble, who had nine points, dished out a game-high six assists.

Shenandoah had a 44-32 advantage on the glass, scored 48 points in the paint and 31 points off of 22 Goucher turnovers.

The Gophers were 8 of 51 (16 percent) from the field.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah hosts Southern Virginia Saturday at 2 p.m. in a rematch of its first round contest from the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
