WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University wrapped up its fall semester ODAC women's basketball slate Saturday with an 89-41 home victory over league newcomer Averett University.
Shenandoah (7-2, 4-1 ODAC) was outstanding defensively in taking out the Cougars (2-8, 0-6).

Playing its new conference foe for the first time in five years and for the 46
th time overall, SU held Averett to just 18 percent (13 of 71) shooting on the afternoon.
The Hornets, who led 21-5 after one and 44-18 at the half, did not allow AU to score more than four field goals in any of the four quarters Saturday afternoon. In that pivotal opening stanza, Shenandoah saw its visitors shoot just 11 percent (2 of 19) from the field and raced out an 11-1 lead before Averett hit its initial field goal of the game at the 1:50 mark.

Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's squad extended its lead by an additional 10 points in the second thanks to a 10 of 15 performance (67 percent) from the field.
The second half was more of the same as SU scored 24 points in the third and 21 in the fourth with the starters sitting out the majority of the remaining 20 minutes. All 15 women in uniform saw action in the contest with
Zoe Star and
Emily Williams the only two players to play more than 27 minutes.
Terese Greene led four women in double figures with 17 points while Williams and
Gabby Krystofiak added 12 each.
Maggie Rooklin rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Ten of the 15 women that saw action scored at least two points.
Shenandoah shot 53 percent (37 of 70) for the game and had a 54-45 advantage on the glass. The Hornets also scored 20 points off of 20 Averett turnovers.
The win is the 98
th of Smeltzer-Kraft's career.
