Indoor Track Opens at VMI

Both Squads Finish Sixth

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's indoor track & field teams opened their respective 2022-23 seasons Saturday with a pair of sixth-place finishes at the VMI Team Challenge.

The Shenandoah men had 42 points in their sixth place showing while the Hornet women recorded 29 points to finish in the same spot.

IN BRIEF
Hampton won both the men's and women's events. HU scored 129 points to win the men's competition by 26 points over Georgetown. Hampton and Georgetown went 1-2 in the women's event as well with HU scoring 225.5 points and winning by 160 over the Hoyas.

The SU men finished five points back of Lynchburg with the Hornet women three back of meet host VMI.

MEN'S RECAP
Graduate student Tucker Kindig, a 2022 All-American outdoors in the hammer throw, uncorked a program-record toss of 19.27 meters to win the weight throw.

Kindig's toss bested the previous school record by more than a meter and he was four meters clear of second place Andrew Granger from VMI. Matthew Smith, Jacob Young, and Zak McIntyre were fourth, fifth, and ninth, respectively, in the same event.

The men had an additional eight top 10 finishes with Miles Moore third in the 200 meters and fourth in the 60. William Crowder was ninth and third, respectively, in those two events after posting the best time, 6.92 seconds, in the 60 meter preliminary heat.

Moore's 21.96 in the 200 breaks the school record of 22.10 that he previously set on Jan. 25, 2020 at the SPIRE Midwest Open.

Young and McIntyre backed up their top 10s in the weight by finishing sixth and ninth, respectively, in the shot put.

WOMEN'S RECAP
The women had nine top 10 finishes on the day with Kaitlin Measell finishing as the runner-up in the long jump. Measell went 5.39 meters in that event with Alexis Hubbard right behind her at 5.10 meters to finish fourth overall.

Those two women were 1-2 among non-DI entrants.

Erin Atkinson, making the quick transition from her NCAA appearance in cross country two weeks ago, was seventh in the mile run with a 5:30.62. Emma Nicely was ninth at 5:51.67.

In the throws, Kiara Felston was third in the weight and eighth in the shot put. SU went 3-5-8 in the weight thanks to Liberty Tennyson's toss of 13.68 meters and Andrea Decker's 12.77.

Felston had a 16.74 in the weight to finish third overall and first among non-DI competitors.

UP NEXT
Both teams are off until hosting the Kaye and JJ Smith Invitational on Jan. 15, 2023.
