WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 22 Shenandoah University baseball team celebrated the opening of its renovated home facility, Bridgeforth Stadium, by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Misericordia Sunday afternoon.
Shenandoah (3-1) came back to win game two, 7-6, in 10 innings after Misericordia (1-1) was a 15-8 winner in the opener.
GAME ONE RECAP
A six-run first put Misericordia in control and on its way to the 15-8 victory.
Five of the six Cougars runs were unearned as SU had a pair of infield errors that extended the frame and Misericordia scored half of the runs with two outs.
Shenandoah answered back with one run in the first and three more in the second only to see the Cougars score one in the third and a combined six runs in the fifth thru seventh innings to prevent an SU comeback.
Henry Delavergne and
Kyle Lisa paced the Hornets with three hits each with Lisa driving in a pair and Delavergne earning the honor of getting the squad's first hit on the renovated Bridgeforth Stadium diamond.
Haden Madagan,
Anthony Ward, and
Matt Moon also drove in runs.
Tad Dean (0-1) took the loss. He allowed seven runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.
Tyler Leonard (1-0) was the winner for Misericordia. He gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings of work. He also struck out two.
GAME TWO RECAP
Senior
Frankie Ritter singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 10
th inning to earn the game two victory.
Ritter's 2-2 single scored
Gavin Horning from third base with the game-winning run. Horning, who became the first SU player to hit a home run in the renovated facility with two-run shot in the third, opened the frame by beating out an infield single to third base.
Winning pitcher
Matt House (1-0), at the plate because SU went to a nine-man lineup when
Kyle Lisa came on to pitch in the eighth, sacrificed Horning to second before a
Matt Moon groundout moved Horning to third.
Ritter than came thru in the clutch, ripping a single to center off reliever Tom Jacob (0-1) for the game-winning run.
House, who had two saves a week ago, pitched a perfect top of the tenth to earn the win.
Horning had three hits with Ritter,
Henry Delavergne, and
Anthony Ward all posting two. Those first three men also drove in two runs each.
