Maroons Complete Season Sweep

Men's Hoops Falls, 97-57

SALEM, Va. – Host Roanoke College pulled away in the second half of a 97-57 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday afternoon at the Cregger Center.

The Maroons (16-6, 8-5 ODAC) scored 55 second-half points to run away from Shenandoah (3-19, 2-11) and complete the regular season sweep over SU.

IN BRIEF
The Hornets jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the initial four minutes of the game only to see Roanoke score 26 of the game's next 34 points to take a 31-19 advantage 4:32 before halftime.

A Matt Simmons three-point-play at 4:18 cut the deficit back into single digits, but the hosts were not finished. RC ended the half on a 9-2 run to lead, 42-28, at the break.

In the second, Roanoke ensured that there would be no repeat of the Winchester meeting from two weeks ago by shooting 61 percent (22-of-36) from the field on its way to the 55-point half.

In the two teams initial meeting of the season, on Jan. 26, the Maroons needed overtime to escape the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center with an 80-71 win. SU had the final possession of regulation in that game but was unable to get off a potential game-winning shot.

Jaylen Williams, the leading scorer in the league, paced the visitors with 10 points. The Hornets shot 39 percent (20-of-51) from the field and had 27 rebounds.

Six Roanoke players, including four of five starters, scored in double figures. The Maroons pulled down 49 rebounds, leading to 26 second-chance points, and shot 55 percent (38-of-69) from the field for the game.

Shenandoah continues this road trip with a 3 p.m. ODAC game Saturday at No. 1 Randolph-Macon.
