SALISBURY, Md. – Shenandoah University played the longest baseball game of the
Kevin Anderson era Sunday afternoon and came out of it with a 6-4 non-league win over No. 8 and defending national champion Salisbury University.
Â
It took 15 innings for the Hornets (15-5) to outlast the Sea Gulls (12-7); SU scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of that frame and before
Matt House closed Salisbury out in the bottom of the frame.
Â
IN BRIEF
Pearce Bucher led off the 15
th with a double down the left field line and then advanced to third when the Gulls had a throwing error attempting to cut him down at third on
Kyle Lisa's groundball to second.
Â
Lisa, who started the game at second base and eventually earned the win on the mound with four innings of relief work, scored an insurance run two batters later on
Haden Madagan's single to left.
Â
Lisa (1-0) struck out two and did not allow a hit in his four innings of relief work. House, the nation's saves leader, came on in the bottom of the 15
th and had one strikeout in posting his seventh save of the season.
Â
Bucher,
Kooper Anderson,
Henry Delavergne, and
Sam Horn all had two hits with Madagan driving in a pair.
Â
Delavergne, Bucher, and Horn also had runs batted in.
Â
Mike Verzaleno tossed eight innings of relief work and gave up one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven. He came on to start the third.
Â
NOTABLE
- The 15-inning game is the longest game of the Anderson era, besting a 14-inning victory over Christopher Newport in 2010, and is also the longest game played for the Hornets in the 21st century.
- The win is also the 800th for the program since it was restarted prior to the 1988 season.
