WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Washington & Lee completed a regular season sweep over host Shenandoah University Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 ODAC baseball victory over the Hornets.
Â
W&L (9-9, 4-5 ODAC) hit a pair of home runs to power the victory over No. 14 SU (15-6, 2-2).
Â
IN BRIEF
After the Generals took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the fourth, Shenandoah answered back on a long ball of its own to take a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Ryan Clawson got the Hornets first hit of the day on a single to left and then trotted home as
Kyle Lisa deposited a John Benner offering over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the season.
Â
Unfortunately for the home crowd, that lead was short-lived as W&L knotted the game at 2-2 on Chapin Bassi's leadoff home run in the sixth.
Â
In the ninth, Washington & Lee pushed across three runs thanks to a one-out single, a two-out walk and then a Zach Senders three-run shot to left.
Â
Shenandoah got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth only to see Benner finish off his complete game performance with a game-ending strikeout.
Â
Benner (3-0) held the Hornets to four hits and struck out nine while throwing just 97 pitches.
Â
SU starter
Calvin Pastel threw the first seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. He struck out four.
Â
Tad Dean (0-2) took the loss. He gave up one hit in 1 2/3 before departing with two outs in the ninth.
Â
Lisa, Clawson,
Pearce Bucher, and
Henry Delavergne had the Hornets hits.
