HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team recorded its third straight ODAC softball split Wednesday afternoon by taking one of two at Eastern Mennonite.
Shenandoah (10-18, 5-9 ODAC) was a 5-4 winner in a nine-inning game two after Eastern Mennonite (18-11-1, 4-10) won game one by a 7-3 count.
GAME ONE RECAP
A five-run third, along with two runs in the fifth, was enough for the host Royals in the 7-3 game one victory.
Shenandoah had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to single runs in the first and second, but gave up five runs on four hits and one walk in the third.
SU closed out the scoring with a run on one hit in the sixth.
Taylor Smith had two of the Hornets four hits in the contest.
Megan Scalley (4-8) took the loss. She allowed five runs on four hits and three walks in two innings of work.
GAME TWO RECAP
With two outs in the top of the ninth,
Tiffany Bower plated
Danielle McNeill from third base with what proved to be the game-winning run in a 5-4 game.
McNeill, placed on second to start the frame by international tie-breaker rules, moved 60 feet from home on
Arlene Miller's groundout to second.
Following
BayLee Jenkins' pop out to short, Bower laced a 2-2 pitch back through the box to bring home McNeill with the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the frame, Smith got a strikeout, a pop out and a fielder's choice to close out the contest.
Smith (1-0) pitched five innings and only allowed one hit while walking one and striking out one.
McNeill and Miller both had two hits in the win with those two women, along with Jenkins, Bower and
Lily Richichi driving in runs.
