WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 21/28 Shenandoah University opened up the 2022 ODAC Baseball Tournament Sunday with a 6-2 victory over Hampden-Sydney in game one of the best-of-three series.
Â
Second-seeded Shenandoah (30-10-1) banged out 13 hits while getting another outstanding pitching performance from senior Calvin Psstel.
Â
IN BRIEF
Pastel (7-0) went 8 1/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing the two runs on four hits and one walk. Â The right-hander needed just 92 pitches for his outing and he retired the Tigers in order in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth.
Â
In the ninth, after issuing a walk and a double, Hornets skipper
Kevin Anderson turned to
Tristan Everett and
Tad Dean to get the final two outs. Dean got that final out on groundout to short to lock up his fourth save of the spring.
Â
Shenandoah jumped on top with one run in the bottom of the first, and after H-SC (20-18) tied it with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of that frame to take the lead for good.
Â
Pearce Bucher led off the frame with a single up the middle and after being sacrificed to second, scored on
Haden Madagan's double to left center.
Â
Madagan later scored on a wild pitch before
Matt Moon drove in
Henry Delavergne with a two-out double to left. Delavergne had reached on an infield single.
Â
SU scored two more runs on three hits in the eighth with Delavergne delivering an RBI double to right and Moon a sacrifice fly to center.
Â
Gavin Horning, who drove in the game's first run with a first inning double, and
Kooper Anderson were both 3 for 4.
Â
Bucher and Delavergne both had two hits each with Moon driving in a pair.
Â
Justin Woodall (1-4) took the loss for H-SC. He allowed four runs on 10 hits and one walk in six innings of work.
NOTABLE
The win is the Hornets 30th of the season. This is the sixth consecutive full season that Shenandoah has won at least 30 games and the 11th time since 2009 that the squad has hit the 30-win mark.
Â
UP NEXT
These two teams are right back at it Monday at 2 p.m. for game two in this best-of-three series. H-SC will be the home team for this game played at Bridgeforth Field.
