Brandon Kates made his first game as the Shenandoah University head men's soccer coach a positive one with a 2-1 victory over host Salisbury in the opening game of the Elmer Lord Classic.

Shenandoah (1-0) playing against former head coach Zack MacDougall, who took over the Sea Gulls (0-1) program in March, scored a pair of goals in a span of 2:06 midway through the second half to provide the winning margin.

The win for the Hornets is their first over Salisbury since 2001 and is just the second in nine meetings dating back to 1992.
