Smeltzer-Kraft Earns 100th Career Win

Hornets Defeat Marlins, 79-42

WINCHESTER, Va. – Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft earned her 100th career win in Shenandoah's 79-42 ODAC women's basketball win Wednesday night against visiting Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Hornets (9-5, 5-3 ODAC) had all 11 players that saw playing time score in the victory over the Marlins (5-10, 1-7 ODAC).

IN BRIEF

Shenandoah outscored VWU 23-6 in the first frame with Madisen Kimble outscoring the visitors with her seven points in the first 10 minutes.

The teams traded runs in the second quarter. SU started it on a 10-4 run thanks to six points by Terese Green. The Marlins responded with their game best 9-0 run in the final 3:30 of the half to cut the hosts' lead to 14 at the break.

The Hornets offense and defense came out hot in the second half, with the offense scoring 26 points in the third while on the other end holding the Marlins to 23% shooting in that span.

SU forced seven of the Marlins 26 turnovers in the third quarter alone. The victors had four players with multiple takeaways in the game.

The final quarter saw SU score 20 points capped off by a late technical foul free-throw made by junior Meredith Lloyd. Lloyd was one of six players to score off the bench for Shenandoah with Maggie Rooklin leading all bench players with eight points.

Greene lead the way in scoring for SU with 25 points and Campbell picked up 10 rebounds along the way.

As the final buzzer sounded and with the Buzzin' Dozen Pep Band playing Happy Birthday, the Hornets surrounded Coach Smeltzer-Kraft to celebrate not only her 100th career win but her birthday as well.
