Ferrum Outlasts Men's Hoops

Hornets Drop Double Overtime Contest

FERRUM, Va. - Host Ferrum College escaped with a 75-71 double overtime victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday night in ODAC men's basketball action.

The Panthers (6-7, 3-2 ODAC) erased a four-point deficit in the final 10 seconds of the first overtime before scoring the initial four points in the second OT to outlast Shenandoah (2-9, 0-3).

IN BRIEF
The Hornets forced overtime by getting a Joshua Stephen 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining to tie the game at 57-57 and then seeing Ferrum miss the front end of a one-and-one with one second left.

In the first OT, a pair of layups, the first by Richard Rogers and the second from Marcus Taylor, gave SU a 61-57 advantage halfway through the five-minute session.

Coach Nick Doyle's club maintained that advantage until Ferrum got a jumper with seven seconds left to cut its deficit to two, and after Shenandoah missed the front end of a one-and-one, hit a floater in the lane as the buzzer sounded to send it to a second OT.

The Panthers took the lead for good by hitting one of two from the line 18 seconds into that second overtime, and then took total control with a 3-pointer at 4:13.

SU cut the deficit to two points following a Brantley Springer jumper in the lane with 2:58 remaining, but Ferrum extended its next three possessions with offensive rebounds and got a bucket and a free throw out of those extra chances to pull away.

Shenandoah's last bucket came on a Stephen '3' with 2.9 seconds remaining to make it 74-71. Ferrum hit one of two from the line after being immediately fouled to seal the victory.

Stephen led the Hornets with a career-high 23.

SU shot 40 percent (29 of 72) for the game and had 52 rebounds to the Panthers 51. Ferrum shot 33 percent (26 of 79).
