FERRUM, Va. – The Shenandoah University hit the road Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup with Ferrum. The Hornets (11-2, 3-1) were victorious over the Panthers (2-11, 0-4) 5-0 behind
Elizabeth Ranberger's hat trick.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Hornets out shot Ferrum 38-0 and fired 18 shots on cage.
All four Hornet goalies played with
Taylor Swann getting the start. None of the Hornet keepers were tested with any shots.
Shenandoah had 20 penalty corners and held Ferrum to none.
Elizabeth Ranberger scored three times, including twice in the first period, to give her five goals on the season.
Mackenzie Watkins scored her first of the season.
Mairead McKibbin scored her ninth goal of the season, which ties her with
Gracie Wilkerson.
McKibbin also picked up a pair of assists on the afternoon and so did
Farren Winter.
Cassidy Morrison was the other Hornet who dished out a helper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets wasted little time jumping all over Ferrum firing two shots within the first two minutes of the game. It was not until
Mairead McKibbin sent a ball to
Elizabeth Ranberger that beat the goalie. The goal would be Ranberger's third on the season and first of the afternoon. In the 7
th minute, it would be Ranberger finding the back of the cage to put the Hornets up 2-0 nothing in the first.
Cassidy Morrison would find Ranberger this time. In the 12
th minute,
Mackenzie Watkins would find the back of the cage for the first time this season on a ball given to her from McKibbin.
The Hornets would fire six shots and earn four penalty corners in the second period but were not able to find the back of the cage. The Hornets would take a 3-0 lead into the break.
With five seconds left in the third quarter,
Mairead McKibbin would take a break for dishing out helpers to her teammates, and find the back of the cage for her ninth goal of the season.
Farren Winter would pick up her first assist of the contest. In the fourth, Ranberger would complete the hat trick to seal the game and the 5-0 victory for the Hornets.
The Shenandoah defense did a fantastic job not allowing any shots on the afternoon to the Panthers.
