Football Overcomes Double Digit Deficit in Win at Guilford

Hornets Win 31-20

GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Saturday afternoon, the Shenandoah Univesity football team overcame a double-digit deficit in a 31-20 ODAC road win over Guilford College.

The Hornets (4-2, 2-1 ODAC) outscored the Quakers (2-4, 0-3) 31-7 in the final three quarters, after trailing 13-0 in the first.

HOW IT HAPPENED

On Guilford's second drive, Shenandoah knocked them back two yards setting up a 3rd-and-12. On the third down, quarterback Bailey Baker found a receiver for 14 yards to move the chains for the home team. The very next play Baker rushed right through the middle of the Hornets' defense for a 70-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Quakers a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a three-and-out, Guilford drove down the field for a touchdown on a nine-play, 80-yard drive to go up 13-0. The touchdown was scored on a 32-yard pass from Baker. Corey Kidwell blocked the extra-point attempt.

The teams traded punts again until the first quarter ended with the Quakers leading 13-0.

Shenandoah had the ball to start the second and took it into the redzone. On a third down from the Quakers' nine yardline, the GC defense picked off a pass and returned it for a pick-six. However, the play was called back due to defensive pass interference, giving SU a first down.

Two plays later Steven Hugney picked up a rushing touchdown to put his team on the board.

Shenandoah forced a fumble halfway through the second, setting up the offense to take the lead. Keyshawn Wilder forced the fumble and Melvin Irby quickly fell on the ball for the recovery.

The very next play Hugney found his leading receiver Braden Domenico for the 21-yard score. Scott Martin nailed the kick right through the uprights to give Shenandoah a 14-13 lead.

Shenandoah got the ball back with time left in the first half and good field position but threw a pick to give the ball back to Guilford. Guilford took a knee to end the half with Shenandoah in the lead.

Shenandoah received the opening kickoff of the second half. Hugney found Myles Miller for a 56-yard reception, placing the Hornets in the redzone once again. The offense was unable to score a touchdown, but Martin made a 21-yard field goal, putting SU up by four.

Guilford completed two passes of at least 35 yards on the next drive, including a 36-yard reception by Jay Daniels for a touchdown, giving Guilford the lead once again.

With Shenandoah looking to regain its lead the Guilford defense forced a fumble at its own 37. After Guilford gained a first down, Shenandoah jumped offsides, setting up a 1st-and-5 in Shenandoah territory. Shenandoah stopped GC on two short runs and an incomplete place as Guilford had a forth-and-short in front of them.

The Quakers decided to take a chance on fourth down but Matt Conroy and Kidwell stuffed the runner at the line giving SU the ball.

Hugney and Aidan Metzger used their legs for a total of 18 yards through the first four plays of Shenandoah's drive. The connection between Hugney and Domenico added another 21 yards to the Hornets' drive as the third frame came to an end.

To end the drive, Shenandoah went back to the run game with Keshawn Toran. Toran rushed to the left side of the line and found the endzone for his first touchdown of the day. Toran and the Hornets had the lead again, now up 24-20.

Shenandoah got the ball back with over 10 minutes remaining and time to chew. Six of the eight plays on the SU drive were runs as they looked to take time off the clock. Metzger took the final run to the house, increasing Shenandoah's lead to 11.

For the final six minutes, Shenandoah held Guilford to just one first down and stopped them twice on fourth down to seal the SU victory.

Hugney passed for 209 yards and added 54 yards on the ground. Hugney, Toran and Metzger combined for the team's 196 rushing yards.

Irby led the defense with the previously mentioned fumble recovery and he had an interception on the afternoon.

Shenandoah now has a five-game winning streak versus Guilford.
