HARRISONBURG, Va. – After a tough overtime loss Saturday afternoon against Lynchburg, the Shenandoah field hockey got back into the win column with a dominating 9-0 win over Eastern Mennonite Wednesday evening on the road. With the win, the Hornets improved to (8-2, 1-1) while with the loss the Royals fell to (3-7, 0-2) on the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Shenandoah dominated in all facets of the game. The Hornets had 39 shots in the game, with 25 of those shots on goal.
Taylor Bullis got the start in the cage and made one save for the Hornets.
Shenandoah had 15 penalty corner opportunities, compared to the Royals one.
Gracie Wilkerson had three goals in the contest.
Mairead McKibbin chipped in with two goals of her own.
Claudia Lenahan scored the first goal of the game, which gives her two goals in back-to-back games.
Abbey Ritter and
Regan Fields picked up their first goals of the season in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Shenandoah looked to get a fast start in the game, as the Hornets earned a penalty corner within the first minute of play.
Gracie Wilkerson fired a shot that was blocked.
Gracie Wilkerson had a golden opportunity in the second minute, but a Royal defender came up with a defensive save to keep the Hornets off the board. In the 5
th minute, Lenahan would find the back of the cage for the fifth goal of the season, and the Hornets did not look back from there. In the 9
th minute,
Cassidy Morrison would find an open
Gracie Wilkerson for her first of three goals on the evening.
In the second period, Wilkerson would find the back of the cage again to increase the lead to 3-0. Just over two minutes later,
Mairead McKibbin would score her first of two goals in the contest and the Hornets would take a 4-0 lead into the break.
Shenandoah would do a majority of their damage in the third period. The Hornets fired 17 shots in the stanza and were able to score on five of them.
Farren Winter would score her third of the season to push the lead to 5-0 in the 33
rd minute. Just over a minute later,
Gracie Wilkerson would complete the hat trick for her seventh of the season. Just over a minute after that, McKibbin would score for a second time in the contest for her eighth of the season and increase the Hornet lead to 7-0.
Abbey Ritter would then find the back of the cage for the first time in her junior campaign.
Regan Fields would finish off the five-goal third with her first in the 41
st minute.
This is now the second time the Hornets have scored nine goals in a game, with the first coming in the season opener against Washington and Jefferson.

It is homecoming on Saturday and the Hornets will be back in action at Aikens Field against Randolph-Macon. That game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
