Football Falls on Homecoming

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah Univesity football team fell, 24-10, versus Bridgewater College Saturday night in the 2023 homecoming game.

The Hornets (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) were held to just 29 rushing yards while the Eagles (4-1, 2-0) ran for 150 yards and forced three crucial turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPEND
Andre Jackson brought the soldout crowd to their feet on the opening kickoff as he returned the ball to the 50 yardline to start the game. Two plays later Steven Hugeny connected with Braden Domenico for a gain of 13, setting SU up at the BC 37. The Eagles would force a stop on fourth down, holding SU scoreless after the great starting field position.

The two teams played great defense for the remainder of the first quarter as both offenses only combined for four first downs for the rest of the opening quarter.

Shenandoah got on the board just over two minutes into the second as Scott Martin made a field goal, putting the Hornets up 3-0. Hugney put SU into field goal range with 56 passing yards on the drive. The three-point lead turned out to be the only lead of the game for SU.

With Shenandoah up 3-0, the Eagles got a first-and-goal at the SU 3, as they looked to punch the ball into the endzone. With the ball just inches from the goalline, the Eagles rushed straight up the middle but fumbled as Ahvyon Boothe jumped on the loose ball for the Hornets' recovery.

Bridgewater forced the three-and-out with Shenandoah pinned deep in its own territory. A Hornets punt from their own endzone set the Eagles up in a great spot to potentially take the lead.

It took three plays for the Eagles to take the lead as Kennedy Fauntleroy rushed it straight through the pylons for the first Bridgewater points of the evening. Bridgewater led 7-3 with 4:30 left in the half.

On the kickoff, the Eagles got the ball right back as Shenandoah fumbled the ball on the return, and BC got the ball within the Hornets' 10. Bridgewater quarterback Malcolm Anderson connected with one of his receivers for another Eagles TD. Shenandoah threw an interception at the end of the first half, keeping Bridgewater up 14-3 at the break.

Shenandoah cut the deficit to just four with a Keshawn Toran two-yard touchdown run and a good extra-point attempt by Martin. The touchdown capped off the largest drive of the night for SU. 14-10 was the score after the end of three quarters.

Bridgewater scored 10 more points and kept Shenandoah off the board for the final 15 minutes. Bridgewaters' defense also forced a handful of stops on fourth down in the frame.

Hugney passed for 266 yards on 27 completions. The QB connected with 10 different receivers, with Domenico and Jackson each having over 50 receiving yards. Issac Tucker added another 47 yards to Hugney's total.

Melvin Irby came up with a blocked field goal for the Hornets. The blocked kick is now Shenandoah's fifth of the season.
