LEXINGTON, Va.- The No. 4 Shenandoah University men's soccer team's program-record season comes to an end as top-seeded Washington and Lee University won an ODAC semifinals match, 4-2, on Thursday night.
Â
The Hornets (9-5-4), playing in their first-ever semifinals game, tied the match up 2-2 early in the second half. However, the Generals (12-3-4) scored two unanswered goals to take the win.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Washington and Lee took just 12 minutes to get the game's first goal. Lucas Pleasants lined up for a free-kick and netted the ball to the right side for the 1-0 advantage. Fifteen minutes later, Alec Perez made it 2-0 for the Generals on an assist from Buster Couhig.
Â
In the latter minutes of the first half, the Hornets caught a break and drew a penalty kick. Coach Brandon Kates called upon senior Matt Allen to take the PK with hopes of cutting the deficit in half. Allen stepped up to the plate and did just that giving SU more momentum heading into the break.
Â
Shenandoah took that momentum and tied up the game in the 48th minute. On a pass from
Devin Kohout,
Kyle Welch found himself at the doorstep of the net and put the ball in the bottom corner to equalize the match.
Â
Just over two minutes later, the Generals' Weyimi Agbeyegbe took control of a rebounded shot and gave his team the lead once again. W&L added their fourth goal in the 78th minute to put them ahead and control the rest of the game.
Â
The Hornets and Generals each had 19 shots in the match with each goalie making five saves.
Â
Shenandoah ends its season with nine wins, the most in 21 years. The team went 7-1-1 at home during the season, including the team's first-ever playoff win in the quarterfinals.
