WINCHESTER, Va. – After a three-week break, and nearly a month since they played a game at home, the Hornets returned from the winter break for a non-conference game with Goucher.
Shawnise Campbell led the way for the Hornets scoring 13 points going 6-7 from the field and pulling down 13 rebounds for another double-double.
Emily Williams chipped in with 12 points of her own and also picked up seven rebounds and four assists. Shenandoah shot 46.9% from the floor while holding Goucher to 17.4%. The Hornets used their height and strength and dominated the boards picking up 40 more rebounds than the visiting Gophers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a slow start for the Hornets as they missed on their first three field goal attempts of the quarter and quickly found themselves down 2-0 with just under nine minutes to play in the first.
Shawnise Campbell picked up where she left off before the break, getting the Hornets on the board for their first basket.
Terese Greene hit a mid-range jumper on a pass from
Gabby Krystofiak and the Hornets would take a 4-2 and not look back for the rest of the half. With 7:39 left in the quarter, Krystofiak would drill her first three of the game. The Hornets dominated the boards throughout the first half and used their speed and height to take advantage of the Gophers. Baskets from
Emily Williams,
Maddie Kimble, and
Shawnise Campbell would push the lead to 14-3 before Goucher would make their next shot. With just under two minutes to play in the first,
Maggie Rooklin capitalized on an
Emily Williams pass and the lead was back up to 11 at 18-7.
Kayla Maxson would add one more basket before the period ended, and the Hornets took a 20-7 lead into the second.
In the second quarter it was all Hornets again. Goucher would score the first four points of the quarter, but then the Hornet offense kicked into gear outscoring the Gophers 30-3 the rest of the way.
Kayla Maxson hit two free throws before knocking down another jumper. After
Maggie Rooklin hit another pair of free throws,
Emily Williams would add to her point total with another jumper off the assist from Rooklin. With just over five minutes to go in the half,
Jessica Littlejohn found knocked down a jumper off an assist from
Maddie Kimble to push the lead to 23.
Zoe Smith after hitting a free throw earlier in the quarter, scored her first field goal of the game pushing the lead to 28 with just under four minutes to play.
Shawnise Campbell and
Terese Greene would get the final two baskets of the half and the Hornets took a 50-14 lead into the break.
After the break, it was more of the same, as the Hornets continued to pour baskets in over Goucher and play strong defense.
Addisyn Banks took the pass from
Meredith Lloyd and scored her first basket as the lead ballooned to 67-19. Lloyd then found a wide-open
Mya Martin before
Kiersten Hostetter knocked down a jumper with just under a minute to play in the third. As the buzzer sounded to end the third,
Mya Martin collected an offensive rebound and put the shot back up as the Hornets took a 73-21 lead into the final period.
It was a slower start in the fourth for the Hornets, but
Mya Martin scored the first basket for Shenandoah with 8:42 left in the period.
Kiersten Hostetter and
Addisyn Banks each scored another jumper as the Hornet lead increased to 79-24. With just over five minutes to go in the game,
Reagan Smith was on the receiving end of a
Maddie Kimble pass that the first-year would score on.
Madison Clay knocked down a pair of free throws before
Brynna Nesselrodt scored of an assist from
Mya Martin. With 2:25 left in the game,
Meredith Lloyd hit a pair of free throws as the lead increased to 89-29.
Madison Clay hit a free throw and scored the final basket of the game for the Hornets and Shenandoah comfortably started the second half of the season with a 92-33 win over Goucher.
