Hornets Soar Past Falcons on Stephen's Late Shot

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team prevailed, 65-63, on Monday night at Messiah University thanks to a late-game jumper from Joshua Stephen.

Stephen, a sophomore for the Hornets (8-0), hit a jump-back stepper with 2.1 seconds left in a tied game to silence the Falcons (2-5) crowd and head back home with the win.

RECAP

Trailing by two, Messiah transitioned into the paint and hit a game-tying layup with 23 ticks left on the clock. Following the basket, Hornets head coach, Nick Doyle, called a timeout to draw up a plan for his squad.

The timeout helped SU get the ball into Stephen's hands, who then dribbled toward the basket before hitting the step back for the lead. Messiah tried to get a half-court shot off at the buzzer that wouldn't land. The bucket capped off a run of six straight points from the guard.

Prior to the winner, junior Binwi Bihai picked up a jumper to tie the game at 57 and would tie the contest again with a pair of free throws.

Shenandoah, who trailed at the half, took a five-point lead with just under 13 minutes to go as Richard Rogers nailed a three before Davion Roberts got a quick steal and made a fast-break layup. That was the largest lead of the game for SU.

Rogers and Roberts each had 12 points for Shenandoah as Stephen led the team with 17.

Shenandoah shot for 50% in the second half while holding Messiah to under 40% shooting during that span. Nic Pullum grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the winning effort.

Shenandoah has now eclipsed its win total from last season and this is the most wins since 2017-18 for the program.
