WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team defeated Salisbury University, 65-52, Wednesday evening in its final non-conference game of the season.
The Hornets (13-7) propelled themselves to victory thanks to a 23-point second quarter against the Sea Gulls (7-15)
IN BRIEF
Shenandoah only trailed once as the Salisbury hit a '3' from the top of the key to take the early 3-2 lead. The Hornets came right back to regain the lead helped by nine
Terese Greene points in the first six minutes.
Up by five to begin the second,
Madisen Kimble knocked down three 3-pointers to put her team up 30-19 at the media timeout.
Shawnise Campbell closed out the half by nailing back-to-back lay-ups in the closing minute to give the Hornets a 20-point lead at the break. Campbell's baskets ensured that all five starters scored in the first half for the victors.
In a case of Deja Vu, the Hornets got back-to-back Campbell lay-ups for the first points of third quarter, just like they did to end the half.
It took all the way to the end of the third but the Hornets finally took a trip to the line.
Maggie Rooklin scored the final point of the third from the charity stripe.
With the lead growing to 24 points midway through the third, SU coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft began to substitute liberally over the final 15 minutes and the hosts coasted home to the 13-point victory.
Shenandoah outscored the visitors 30-12 in the paint and 17-7 on points off turnovers.
Greene, Kimble, and Campbell all had double-digit points with Greene scoring 17 in just two and a half quarters of play.
