Baseball Tops Sea Gulls

Hornets Win, 2-1, in 10 innings

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 9/24 Shenandoah University earned its first win over a nationally ranked baseball team this season with a 2-1, 10-inning home victory over No. 2/1 Salisbury University Monday afternoon.

In a game where both starting pitchers were outstanding, Shenandoah (12-2) got its winning runs off of a pair of Salisbury (12-2) relievers.

IN BRIEF
Trailing 1-0 after the Sea Gulls scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th off of SU reliever Parker Farrington (3-0), the Hornets scored the game-winning runs thanks to a hit batsman, a triple, and a sacrifice fly.

Second baseman Kyle Lisa led off the Shenandoah 10th by being hit by a pitch, and after being sacrificed to second, scored on Kooper Anderson's triple to right.

With Frankie Ritter stepping to the plate, Salisbury skipper Troy Brohawn replaced reliever Zach Adams (0-1) with Brandon Epstein and had Epstein load the bases by putting both Ritter (2 for 3) and Gavin Horning (.536 batting average coming into the game) on base via intentional walk.

This brought designated hitter, and 2021 All-America, Colby Martin to the plate. Epstein missed with his first three offerings, and after Martin took a called strike on the fourth pitch, lofted the next one to centerfield for the game-winning sacrifice fly.

It is the second time this season that teams have intentionally walked Horning to get to Martin, and Martin is now 1 for 1 with three RBI on a home run and sacrifice fly in those situations.

Ritter and Anderson both had two hits for the victors with Martin, Pearce Bucher, and Haden Madagan getting one each.

Hornets starter Jacob Bell went 9.0 innings, scattering seven hits and walking one while striking out two. Farrington gave up the one unearned run on one hit, walked one and struck out one.

Sea Gulls starter Jimmy Atkins, the 2022 D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Year, struck out eight, walked one (his first of the year) and allowed six hits in 8.0 innings of work.

Pinch runner Patrick Campbell scored Salisbury's ninth inning run. He came home from second on Cameron Hyder's two-out single up the middle.
