BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team recorded its second straight doubleheader split Thursday afternoon by taking one of two from Southern Virginia.
Shenandoah (4-8) was a 9-7 winner over Southern Virginia in the opener before the Knights (9-3) came back to win, 11-3, in five innings in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Hornets banged out 14 hits in the 9-7 game one victory and scored runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on their way to victory.
Right fielder Liiy Richichi had three hits with
Danielle McNeill,
Arlene Miller,
Brenna Snyder, and
Paige Eagleton all getting two each.
Snyder drove in two runs with Richichi, Eagleton,
Tiffany Bower and
Taylor Smith plating one apiece.
A three-run sixth, started with Richichi scoring on a passed ball and both Bower and Snyder driving in runs with singles, provided the game-winning runs.
Kayla Stephenson went the first 4 2/3 innings and got the win after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks. She struck out three.
Taylor Smith pitched the final 2 1/3 and posted her second save of the year after giving up one run on three hits and two walks. She struck out one.
GAME TWO RECAP
Southern Virginia salvaged the split thanks to an eight-spot in the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth on its way to the 11-3, 5 inning victory.
Shenandoah, which was held to four hits, scored single runs in the first, second, and third innings.
McNeill, Bower, Smith, and Eagleton had the squad's hits with Bower driving in two runs and Eagleton one. Bower had an RBI double in the first and drove in a run with a groundout in the third.
Eagleton homered in the second.
