Baseball Sweeps Marlins

Hornets Win 9-1 and 6-5

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 3/4 Shenandoah University swept another ODAC doubleheader Sunday, taking out Virginia Wesleyan by 9-1 and 6-5 scores.

Shenandoah (23-2, 9-1 ODAC) ran its winning streak to 13 games with the two victories over the Marlins (4-18-1, 3-6-1).

GAME ONE RECAP
SU pitchers Jacob Faivre and Ricky Snyder held Virginia Wesleyan to just two hits in the 9-1 victory.

After VWU scored its lone run in third without the benefit of a hit, Shenandoah answered back with three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three more in the sixth to break the game wide open.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club added two more in the eighth to provide the final margin of victory.

The Hornets scored three unearned in the fourth to take the lead for good with Ryan Clawson and Frankie Ritter driving in the go-ahead and insurance runs with a groundout to short and a single to right, respectively.

In the sixth, Gavin Horning had a two-out, bases loaded triple to right on a ball that Virginia Wesleyan lost in the sun to make the score 7-1 and chase Marlins starter Cam Nolet (1-4).

Snyder (2-0), who came for Faivre to start the fifth, pitched the final five innings to get the victory. He gave up a pair of hits (both singles) and walked three while striking out six. Faivre gave up the run on five walks and two hit batsmen against four strikeouts.

Shenandoah had 12 hits in the game with all coming from the top six hitters in the lineup. Colby Martin had three hits in four at-bats with Horning, Kooper Anderson, Pearce Bucher, and Haden Madagan getting two each.

Horning drove in three runs and Martin scored three runs in addition to stealing a pair of bases.

GAME TWO RECAP
Down 5-1 after scored one run in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth, Shenandoah rallied with a five-spot in the seventh to earn the 6-5 victory.

Martin, who homered in the first inning to put SU on top, made his first appearance on the mound to close out the contest. After missing the entire 2022 season after having arm surgery, Martin made his first mound appearance count with a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save. He had two strikeouts in the three batters faced.

Horning had the big hit in the five-run seventh with a bases loaded triple to right center to tie the contest at 5-5. One batter later, he trotted home on Bucher's double into the left field corner.

All five runs in the frame were unearned as VWU dropped a relay throw at second base with what would have been the second out of the inning. SU followed with a single, a fielder's choice, and a walk to load the bases for Horning.

Frankie Ritter had three hits and Bucher two to lead the offense.

Parker Farrington (4-0) got the win with an inning and a third of scoreless relief. He walked two and struck out three.
