LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 3/3 Shenandoah University saw its record-setting baseball season come to an end Saturday with a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Lynchburg in game two of the Lynchburg Super Regional.
Â
Lynchburg (43-7) scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth to push past Shenandoah (42-8) and claim its spot in the NCAA Division III World Series.
Â
IN DEPTH
SU put its first two hitters on base in the top of the ninth, and following a
Frankie Ritter sacrifice bunt, had them both in position with one out. Unfortunately for Shenandoah, Lynchburg reliever Jack Bachmore once again shut the door with a strikeout and a pop out to earn his 13th save of the season and second in less than 24 hours.
Â
Avery Neaves had the big blow in the Lynchburg eighth, hitting a two-run shot over the left field wall to give the victors the lead. A single, a sacrifice bunt followed by a passed ball and a sacrifice fly led to Lynchburg's third run of the frame.
Â
Parker Farrington (5-4) took the loss after giving up the three runs on three hits in his only inning of work. Starter
Jacob Bell was outstanding, holding Lynchburg to four hits while striking out five and walking three in 103 pitches over seven innings of work.
Â
Shenandoah, which outhit Lynchburg, 8-7, scored its lone run in the fifth.
Kooper Anderson singled through the left side, advanced to second on a Ritter single and third when
Colby Martin flied to right.
Â
After
Gavin Horning was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Anderson came home on a wild pitch.
Â
Ritter, the leading hitter in ODAC and SU history, had two hits along with two for
Tyler Blittersdorf and two for
Ryan Clawson.
Â
Haden Madagan had the remaining hit.
Â
Shenandoah left 11 men on base, reached base safely in every inning and had a runner in scoring position in every inning except the third.
