WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 3 and second-seeded Shenandoah University opened up 2023 ODAC Baseball Tournament play Saturday with a 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Guilford College.
Â
Shenandoah (35-5) scored four runs in the eighth to rally past the Quakers (20-18-1).
Â
IN BRIEF
Trailing 3-2 heading into the eighth, SU scored four runs on five hits off of three Guilford relievers to complete the comeback.
Â
Colby Martin led off the frame with a single up the middle, and after the ODAC's leading hitter,
Gavin Horning, sacrificed Martin to second,
Pearce Bucher put Martin 90 feet from tying the game with a single through the left side.
Â
Pinch hitter
Connor Houser knotted it at 3-3 with a groundout to second, bringing
Ryan Clawson to the plate with Bucher at third and two out. Clawson delivered, singling up the middle to give Shenandoah the lead for the first time in the contest.
Â
Haden Madagan followed with a single to right center, and after he stole second,
Kyle Lisa doubled in both Clawson and Madagan with the final two runs of the game.
Â
In the ninth, junior
Parker Farrington (5-2) worked a 1-2-3 frame to earn the victory. He retired all four batters he faced in the game.
Â
Jackson Marcellus (7-4) took the loss for the Quakers after allowing two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. GC starter Marcello Ricigliano was outstanding in six innings of work – he allowed an unearned run on three hits and retired the initial 10 outs of the game before Shenandoah got a hit.
Â
Lisa was 3 for 4 with the two RBI while Martin and catcher
Tyler Blittersdorf both had two hits.
