GETTYSBURG, PA - The No. 25 ranked Shenandoah University Hornets won their second game in a row defeating the Gettysburg Bullets 3-1 Wednesday afternoon. Shenandoah (3-1) had two goals from
Gracie Wilkerson to help lead the Hornets past the Bullets (2-2).
It was all Shenandoah from the jump as the Hornets earned two penalty corners with good scoring opportunities to get an early lead. Enter graduate student
Rachel Koerner. The New Tripoli, PA native would make her impact known as she scored within the minute of entering the game.
Mairead McKibbin would send a shot across the goal mouth that Koerner would then find the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.
The Hornets applied pressure in the second firing five shots off while earning a penalty corner, but were not able to find the back of the cage and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half was quiet for the first five minutes of play as both teams were trying to get the next goal. Then over 40 seconds, the Hornets would get a goal from
Gracie Wilkerson, her second of the season, on a tipped ball that bounced off the goalie, to give Shenandoah a 2-0 lead. The Bullets would then take the face-off, dribble down the field and Gettysburg would earn a corner. Gettysburg made the most of their opportunities and capitalized on a shot through traffic off of the corner to cut the Hornet lead in half. Just over three minutes later, the Hornets would get that goal back on a corner of their own as Wilkerson would score her second of the game and third of the season, on an assist from
Camryn DeLeva.
The Hornet defense shut down any looming threat Gettysburg threw their way and took the victory 3-1 for the first road game of the season. Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference matchup with FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ.
