Football Dominates Ferrum in ODAC Opener

FERRUM, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team defeated Ferrum College 38-3 on the road Saturday afternoon in its first ODAC game of the season.

The Hornets (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored 24 points in the first half over the Panthers (2-2, 0-1) in route to their second-largest margin of victory in an ODAC game and largest ever win over Ferrum.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Quarterback Steven Hugney completed four passes on the opening drive for a total of 48 yards, with the last being a 7-yard reception by Keshawn Toran for the touchdown. AJ Maxwell added 30 yards on the ground on SU's first drive.

The SU defense forced a three-and-out on Ferrum's opening drive. On the second play of the possession, Jaelyn Smith knocked the Panthers' offense back 10 yards with his first sack of the season. Shenandoah fair caught the punt at the Ferrum 37, setting up the offense in a prime position.

On the ensuing drive, SU took advantage of a pass interference call that put them inside the redzone, but Ferrum got to Hugney with a sack for their only of the day which forced the Hornets to attempt the field goal. Kicker Scott Martin drilled the 31-yard field goal attempt to make it a 10-0 Shenandoah lead.

Early in the second, the Panthers stopped the Hornets run game to set up a fourth-and-one at the Panthers' 24. Head coach Scott Yoder would call a timeout to draw up a new play which proved to work out well as Hugney rushed to the right-side for a gain of 16.

Three plays later and after a Hornets penalty pushed them back 15 yards, Hugney connected with receiver Broden Domenico in the left side of the endzone for the second Hornets' TD of the day.

After forcing another Ferrum punt, the Shenandoah offense had another chance at increasing the lead. It'd be Hugney once again finding a receiver for the lead-increasing TD as he found Jaden Roberts on a fourth down conversion for the 29-yard score, his longest of the afternoon.

With 36 seconds left in the second quarter, Ferrum got in the score column on a 30-yard field goal. The field goal would be their only score of the game.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Corey Kidwell broke through the offensive line and sacked Ferrum's quarterback, for a loss of nine yards. Kidwell and the defense only allowed three yards over the next three plays as they forced another three-and-out.

With the Hornets in control and threatening to score again, Ferrum's defense stood up to the challenge and forced a fumble at their own 5-yard line to give the Panthers' offense a chance. Backed up to their own endzone, Ferrum worked the ball down the field on four rushes for 18 yards and 15 extra yards tacked on thanks to a facemask penalty on SU. FC completed a 13-yard pass to get them into Shenandoah territory only for it to be called back due to the offense holding at the line. The Panthers only made it back to Hornets' territory one other time for the remainder of the contest.

With Ferrum back in possession of the ball, Kidwell found his way back to the quarterback and this time forced a fumble, which was picked up by SU's Jake Jack and returned 22 yards to the house. After the successful extra-point attempt, Shenandoah led 31-3.

With 7:09 remaining in the game, running back Jalen Redfearn rushed his way 34 yards down the field for Shenandoah's final touchdown, making it 38-3 after the PAT.

Four plays later, Melvin Irby forced another turnover for the Shenandoah defense as he intercepted a pass at the Shenandoah 35. Ferrum got the ball one last time and had to punt for an eighth time, allowing SU to kneel out the final seconds.

Shenandoah had a total of 224 rushing yards, 7th all-time in program history. Maxwell led the team with 104 yards on the ground.

Hugney completed 15 passes to eight different receivers for 183 yards through the air.

The Hornets' defense sacked Ferrum five times in the game. Shenandoah has now outscored Ferrum 58-3 in the last two meetings.
