Men's Basketball Drops Tight Contest at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team lost an ODAC match on Wednesday evening, 65-58, at Averett University.

The Cougars (4-11, 2-5 ODAC) carried a first half lead over to the second and held off the Hornets (12-3, 3-3) after SU took the lead two separate times in the final 20 minutes.

RECAP

After a scoreless first minute, Evan Makle made a three for the game's opening points and Jaylen Williams followed that with a basket in the paint on the next possession. As SU led by two, the home team scored ten straight points to lead 15-7.

Averett led by as much as 11 in the first half before buckets from Binwi Bihai and Makle cut the SU deficit to seven at the half.

Williams hit a three to start the second to bring SU within four, as Joshua Stephen would then hit a three from the top of the key to cut the deficit even more. Another Williams basket in the paint put SU back in the lead, 28-27 with 17:14 left in play.

Shenandoah and Averett traded baskets for the next three minutes with Shenandoah getting a lead of three with a layup from Davion Roberts. The Cougars then tied the game, 36-36, right before the media timeout.

Following the timeout, Averett went on another run to regain the lead and go up by six but the Hornets would pull within two on a Samuel Daily three. That's as close as Shenandoah would get for the rest of the game, as Averett held off the SU comeback attempt to secure the win.

Makle led SU in scoring with 16 points while Williams was also in double-digits with 13.
