HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a quick start for the Hornets in the opening quarter, as Shenandoah jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind baskets from
Emily Williams,
Terese Greene, free throws from
Gabby Krystofiak and a three-ball from
Maddie Kimble. The Hornets would go on to push the lead to 11 points behind Kimble's second triple of the night at the 4:24 mark of the period forcing Guilford to call timeout. Out of the timeout, the Quakers would end the period on a 14-2 run to take a 17-16 lead, one they would not give up again, going into the second quarter.
In the second, Guilford scored the first four points of the quarter, before
Emily Williams capitalized on a fastbreak off the assist from
Maddie Kimble to make it a three-point game at 21-18. Shenandoah tried to keep the game close but had a hard time scoring the basket shooting 35.9% from the floor and 31% deep.
Emily Williams connected on another layup at the 8:12 mark to pull within four (24-20,) 7-0 run before
Kayla Maxson ended the drought with a layup with 2:38 left in the half.
Maddie Kimble knocked down four attempts from the charity stripe sandwiched between a layup from
Kayla Maxson, as the Hornets found themselves down 33-28 with 90 seconds to go in the half. Guilford hit one more jumper before
Kayla Maxson drilled a three in the waning seconds of the half. The Hornets found themselves down 35-31 going into the break.
Out of the break, Guilford scored the first five points of the half forcing Shenandoah to take an early timeout.
Gabby Krystofiak and
Terese Greene connected on back-to-back layups before Guilford answered with another three-point shot. The combination of
Maddie Kimble and
Terese Greene brought the Hornets back to within two points at 43-41 with 6:24 left in the quarter, but the Quakers used another 8-0 run to push the lead back up to 10.
Gabby Krystofiak and Terese Green scored the final five points in the third, but Shenandoah still found themselves down 13 going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was the one that the Hornets were used to playing all season as they held the Quakers to only 13 points in the final frame while scoring 17 of their own. Shenandoah got baskets from
Zoe Smith, and a free throw from
Shawnise Campbell,
Maddie Kimble,
Terese Greene, and
Gabby Krystofiak to get the Quaker lead down to six, however, it would not be enough as Guilford's lead was too big to overcome and the Hornets would drop the game 72-63.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will have a few days to regroup before hitting the road on Saturday, as Shenandoah continues conference play with a 4:30 pm tip with Roanoke.
