SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah women's basketball team got back on track picking up a 69-44 road conference victory over Roanoke College Saturday afternoon.
Kayla Maxson led all scorers with 14 points in the contest on a 6-9 shooting performance from the field, going 2-2 from deep while picking up a pair of rebounds, and an assist.
Gabby Krystofiak and
Shawnise Campbell eached chipped in with 12 points. Krystofiak's 12 points came on a 4-6 performance from behind the arc, her best performance of the season, and also had four rebounds and an assist. Campbell once again had another efficient outing going 6-9 from the field, pulling down five boards, and adding another block to her team-leading 31 and an assist in only 15 minutes of play.
Maddie Kimble was the other Hornet with double-digit points with 11 going 3-6 deep and adding two free throws along with six rebounds and three assists. For the game, the Hornets shot 41% from the field and 45.5% from three, while holding the Maroons to 23% from the floor and only 17% from three-point range.
Emily Williams got the scoring going for the Hornets just under a minute into the game.
Shawnise Campbell went on a tear, scoring the next six points for the visitors with three straight layups. Campbell scored her fourth layup of the game halfway through the first to push the lead back to seven at 10-3.
Emily Williams scored the 12
th point of the quarter, but then Roanoke would hold Shenandoah scoreless for the remainder of the first period. The Maroons went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and took a one-point lead into the second quarter.
Terese Greene and
Kayla Maxson hit early jumpers in the second to take a 16-14 lead with 7:54 left in the half. The Maroons regained a one-point lead at 17-16 with 6:23 on the clock, but after that, it was all Hornets starting with a pair of
Maddie Kimble three-pointers. With the Hornets in the bonus, Shenandoah took advantage of free points connecting on two straight trips to the charity line from
Emily Williams and
Terese Greene.
Gabby Krystofiak connected on a pair of triples, including one with only four seconds left in the half. The Hornets took a 12-point lead into the break.
Krystofiak started the second half just as she ended the first, drilling a pair of threes to push the lead up to 16.
Maddie Kimble then added another three as the lead continued to balloon.
Kayla Maxson hit her first triple of the game with just over three minutes to play in the period, before
Shawnise Campbell returned to cash in on one more layup off an assist from
Maggie Rooklin.
Kayla Maxson's jumper with 11 seconds left gave the Hornets a 51-38 going into the fourth.
Both teams struggled to score to start the fourth but
Sydney Shepos hit a pair of free throws before
Kayla Maxson hit another triple to put Shenandoah up 18 with six minutes to play.
Emily Williams's jumper, Campbell's layup, and
Maggie Rooklin's three gave the Hornets the biggest lead of the game at 67-41. Roanoke hit one final three before
Kayla Maxson hit the final jumper of the game, and Shenandoah comfortably won 69-44.
