Men's Basketball Falls to No. 1 Hampden-Sydney

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team lost 69-52 in an ODAC home game versus No. 1 Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon in the alumni game for SU.

The Hornets (13-5, 4-5 ODAC) started the second half on an 11-0 run to take the lead before the Tigers (16-1, 8-1) closed the game on a 35-14 run to regain the lead and take the win.

RECAP

After the Tigers got on the board first, Jaylen Williams went right down the court and tied the game for SU with a mid-range jumper. Hampden-Sydney then jumped out to an 8-4 lead before Evan Makle made it a one-point game with a three. Joshua Stephen hit a pair of free throws, giving Shenandoah its first lead of the game at 9-8.

Following an 11-10 advantage for the Hornets, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run and started pulling ahead. The visitors stayed ahead in the first, taking a seven-point lead into the half.

Shenandoah rebounded from the deficit and came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders. Joseph Baldwin started the 11-0 run for SU with a layup as Davion Roberts made it a two-point game with another three for SU. Nic Pullum used his size and power to get an easy layup to finally tie the game.

Williams then hit back-to-back jumpers, with help from a Stephen steal, to put Shenandoah up by four. Roberts knocked down two free throws to give SU a six-point lead, its largest of the game.

The Tigers responded right way with a 10-0 run to regain a lead of four and held that lead for the remainder of the game. Shenandoah got points from five different players in the final half of the second, but Hampden-Sydney maintained the lead for the win.

Williams led Shenandoah with 10 points while Stephen led them in rebounds and assists with eight and four, respectively.
