Football's First Half Surge Leads to 42-20 ODAC Win Over Ferrum

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team had 369 first half yards in route to a 42-20 ODAC win over Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon at GloFiber Field at Shentel Stadium.

The Hornets (4-1, 1-1 ODAC) picked up their first conference win of the season after scoring touchdowns on the first five drives of the game and holding the Panthers (2-3, 0-2) to 44 yards in the first 30 minutes of action.

RECAP
After an incompletion on the first play of the game, Steven Hugney connected with Broden Domenico down the sideline for a gain of 19. SU then switched to the ground game, running the ball on the next six plays. The final run of that stretch saw Jalen Redfearn breeze through the middle of the line for a 22-yard touchdown. The Panthers respond right back with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown of their own. On the point-after attempt, SU sent pressure and Ethan Brown got a hand on the ball, blocking the tying point.

During the next SU drive, Hugney kept the Hornets offense on the field after completing a short pass to Logan Bigbee for 17 yards on a 3rd-and-7 play. The Hornets offense went back to the air with Myles Miller picking up big yardage to set SU up at the edge of the redzone.

Two incompletions led to another third-and-long but Hugney and Bigbee connected once again, this time for a gain of 15, to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Hugney left the Ferrum defense dazed on a read option, easily finding the endzone to put SU up 14-6 midway through the first.

On a 3rd-and-15 for Ferrum, Avyon Boothe forced a fourth down after instantly meeting a receiver in the middle of the field on a completion, forcing a three-and-out. This gave the ball right back to the Hornets offense. Hugney went a perfect 4-4 on the drive, capped off by a 14-yard score to Michael Sheil, his first TD reception of his career.

The SU defense forced another three-and-out as Ferrum tried to run the ball. Each play Ethan Brown was there to stop the Panthers for short gains with Matt Conroy picking up two assists on the drive as well.

Ferrum looked to have SU stopped for the first time in the game but an offside call on a 4th-and-1 gave Shenandoah the first down. This led to Hugney running in for another touchdown, nine plays later, to extend the lead to 22.

On the next play from scrimmage, the Panthers picked up their first first down of the game but the play was called back on illegal formation. Before Ferrum could gain anymore yards, another illegal formation penalty was called. This led to a 3rd-and-12 play. Looking for the first, Ferrum lofted the ball in the air and directly into the hands of SU's Sean Perry. The interception set SU on Ferrum's side of the field

A nine-yard reception by Jaden Roberts and a four-yard run by Bryce Buchanan gave Shenandoah a first down at the Panther's 36. With Buchanan in the back field, SU went to the air and connected with the running back on a wheel route for a 36-yard touchdown reception. Scott Martin's point-after attempt gave SU the 35-6 lead.

Ferrum finally strung together first downs but a failed pitch attempt led to a fumble, which Jake Jack hopped on to give SU the ball and secure the 35-6 advantage as the teams went to the half.

The visitors came out of the halftime break and stopped the Hornets' offense for the entire third quarter which allowed them to cut the deficit. Two touchdowns by the Panthers brought the game to a 35-20 lead for SU.

In the middle of the fourth and SU looking for its first score of the half, Ferrum looked to have SU stopped with a fumble at the goalline, but a personal foul kept the Hornets with the ball and placed them at the FC one yardline. Two plays later, Buchanan broke past the line and scored the dagger, making it 42-20 SU.

A forced fumble by Liban Farah, recovered by Quante Redd ended Ferrum's final drive as SU chewed the final three minutes off the clock.

Hugney ended the game with 249 passing yards, 53 yards on the ground, and four touchdowns. Buchanan led SU on the ground with his 89 yards and ended the day as SU's top receiver with two catches for 43 yards and a score. SU rushed for 261 yards between six rushers on 40 attempts.

Hugney spread the wealth through the air today, finding 11 different receivers on his 17 completions.

Jake Jack had the one sack today for the defense, as he sniffed out a trick play on Ferrum's first offensive play of the day. Matt Conroy led the defense with eight tackles. Quante Redd, Sean Perry, and Liban Farah each had six.
