Men's Basketball Defeated by SUNY Geneseo in Season Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team tipped off its 2024-25 season Saturday night but fell short, dropping a 70-48 decision to SUNY Geneseo in the Winchester Sports Medicine Team Tip-Off Classic.

The Hornets (0-1) struggled offensively, particularly in the first half, shooting just 15.6% (5-for-32) from the field. Meanwhile, the Knights (1-0) capitalized on their opportunities, connecting on 42.9% (12-for-28) of their shots to build a halftime lead they wouldn't relinquish. SUNY Geneseo maintained their momentum after the break, scoring 43 points in the second half to secure the win.

RECAP

SUNY Geneseo jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before Shenandoah got on the board with a Joseph Baldwin free throw. Freshman Shamir Taylor tallied his first career points at the charity stripe, narrowing the gap to 8-3. However, it wasn't until Taylor's three-pointer at the 9:54 mark that the Hornets made their first field goal, cutting the deficit to six. Ellis Wright followed with a three-pointer, bringing SU within three at 12-9.

Despite closing the gap, the Hornets couldn't sustain their momentum as the Knights closed the first half on a 15-10 run, taking a 27-19 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Dorian Davis opened the scoring for Shenandoah with a jumper, and Baldwin followed with a layup, but the Knights responded with a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 18 points. Davis momentarily stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer at 12:48, but SUNY Geneseo's relentless offensive attack saw them stretch their advantage to as many as 22 points, sealing the victory.

Dorian Davis paced the Hornets with 11 points, while Shamir Taylor added 10 in his collegiate debut. Matt Simmons made an impactful return after missing last season due to injury, contributing eight points and three rebounds.
