MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team returned from the holiday break in fine form, claiming an 81-70 road victory over Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. This win improves the Hornets' season record to 7-3 overall and keeps them undefeated in conference play at 3-0.
Senior guard Terese Greene delivered another outstanding performance, pacing all scorers with 28 points. Greene shot 10-of-22 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also added seven rebounds, two steals, and an assist, showcasing her all-around game. The Hornets' balanced attack included three additional players scoring in double figures. Maddie Kimble tallied 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, pulling down five rebounds and dishing out six assists. Emily Williams contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and a team-high eight assists, while Danni Marmo chipped in with 10 points in just 12 minutes, going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
As a team, Shenandoah shot an efficient 50% (31-of-62) from the field while limiting the Red Hawks to 38.1% shooting. The Hornets also dominated on the glass, out rebounding the Red Hawks 46-28.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading baskets early. After a tie at 4-4, Maddie Kimble's layup gave Shenandoah its first lead. Greene soon went on a personal 5-0 run to extend the advantage, and by the end of the quarter, the Hornets led 24-18 behind balanced scoring and solid defense.
Shenandoah widened the gap in the second quarter with contributions from Marmo and Gabby Krystofiak. Despite Montclair State's persistence and three-point shooting, the Hornets answered with a late surge, punctuated by Greene's final bucket of the half. The Hornets entered the break up 44-32.
The Hornets clamped down defensively to start the second half, holding the Red Hawks scoreless for nearly four minutes. Williams' mid-range jumper gave Shenandoah its largest lead of the game at 52-36. However, Montclair State responded with an 18-7 run, trimming the Hornets' lead to 59-54 heading into the fourth.
Montclair State made a strong push in the final frame, tying the game at 64-64 with six minutes remaining. But Kimble and Williams delivered in the clutch, combining for critical baskets to regain the lead. Marmo's late-game layup and Greene and Marmo connecting on 7-8 free-throw shooting in the closing moments sealed the 81-70 victory.
