Randolph Holds Off Men's Basketball in ODAC Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team's late comeback attempt fell short in an 86-80 loss at home on Wednesday night versus Randolph College in the team's conference opener.

The Hornets (3-4, 0-1 ODAC) trailed by as much as 17 points in the second half against the WildCats (5-1, 1-1). A putback dunk by Joseph Baldwin with 3:15 left started a 9-4 run for SU which brought them within six points in the final minute of the contest, but RC sealed the win, making four free throws in the final seconds.

RECAP

The ODAC teams traded leads and baskets in the game's first five minutes, putting the teams tied at 12. Dorian Davis drove in the paint for a layup which regained a lead for SU. The Hornets capitalized on a Randolph turnover and went up by five with a three from Davis.

The five-point advantage proved to be the largest of the night for the home team as Randolph used a 14-3 run to jump out by six with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half. Joseph Baldwin nailed a shot from long range, cutting SU's deficit down to six with four minutes left, but the WildCats held the Hornets from scoring again in the first as they'd take a 15-point lead into the halftime break.

Randolph's lead stayed at double-digits for the first 18 minutes of the final half. Landon Russ connected with Baldwin in the paint for an easy layup, putting the Hornets within nine. Baldwin drew a foul on the shot and made his free throw, bringing SU closer.

The WildCats went back up by 10 with a step-back jumper, shutting the door on Shenandoah's comeback. Matt Simmons and Russ made back-to-back layups in the final 80 seconds of the game but the deficit was too large to overcome, as Randolph held on for its first ODAC win of the season.

Davis led all scorers with 25 points as Baldwin backed him up with 23. Joshua Stephen contributed to the Hornets' total with 14 points.

Shenandoah was held to just 4-10 shooting from the free throw line while the visitors capitalized by making 77.8% of their shots from the line. However, the Hornets' did improve on their overall shooting in the second half. SU shot just over 43% in the first while making over 51% of their shots in the second half.
