Men's Basketball's Comeback Cut Short at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Despite another late comeback attempt, the Shenandoah University men's basketball team fell 69-65 at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon in ODAC action.

The Hornets (3-5, 0-2 ODAC) trailed by 17 with 7:30 left in the final half of play and crawled back to come within three points in the final minute. The Eagles (5-3, 1-1) made one of its two free throw attempts with 19 seconds remaining, but SU missed a shot on its last possession, as BC held on for the victory.

RECAP

The Eagles opened the game by scoring on six of its first seven possessions as they led 14-3 in the early going. The home team's lead stayed at double digits and got all the way up to 17 points, until a three from Marcus NeSmith hit a shot from long range, putting SU down by seven.

Shenandoah missed back-to-back threes as Bridgewater transitioned down to the other end of the court and made a three and a layup of their own to go back up by double digits. Buckets from NeSmith and Joshua Stephen brought the Hornets' deficit down to seven with just under two minutes left in the first.

An Eagles turnover led to Stephen finding Joseph Baldwin in the paint for a buzzer-beater layup heading into the halftime break with Bridgewater leading 37-30.

Shenandoah turned to Stephen for more points in the paint, as the junior made a layup, cutting BC's lead down to six. However, for the Hornets, Bridgewater stayed in front of Shenandoah and jumped back out to a 17-point advantage.

Over the next two minutes, Shenandoah kept the home team from scoring as Stephen and Davion Roberts combined for five points for SU. Four consecutive free throws from Shamir Taylor assisted the Hornets in coming within six points with 2:18 remaining.

After the Eagles made two free throws of their own, Dorian Davis made a mid-range shot before nailing a second-chance three-pointer two possessions later with 18 ticks left on the clock. With the shot clock turned off, Shenandoah had to foul in order to get the ball back and luckily for the hosts, they made the ensuing free throw, putting the game out of reach.

Shenandoah's defense forced 17 turnovers for a turnover margin of plus seven. Stephen, Taylor, and Matt Simmons each had multiple steals.

Davis led the Hornets in points with 15 and made 50 percent of his shots from the field. Taylor came off the bench and dropped a season-high 12 points, marking the third time this season he's had a double-digit performance. Baldwin was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double.
