Men's Basketball Advances in ODAC Tournament for First Time

WINCHESTER, Va. - With a 71-65 win over No. 9 University of Lynchburg in the first round of the 2024 ODAC Tournament, the No. 8 Shenandoah University men's basketball teams advances to the ODAC Quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

SU (17-9) held LYN (11-15) to just 13 points in the first half and held them without a basket for the final 11 minutes of the frame en route to the SU Hornets' first-ever ODAC Tournament win.

RECAP

In front of a packed crowd, in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center, SU fell behind 4-0 quickly before taking the lead, 8-6, for the first time with an Evan Makle three at the 5:44 mark of the first half. Neither team found a point for the next two minutes as Landon Russ finally broke the silence with a bucket.

LYN picked up its last basket of the first half with 11:51 remaining in the first half, cutting SU's lead to 10-8. As the SU defense picked up the pace, its offense did the same. A Jaylen Williams' three started a 14-0 run for SU.

During the run, Davion Roberts, Kendrick Robinson, and Nic Pullum all gathered layups while Williams ended the run with another long ball. With just under eight to play in the first, SU now led 24-8. In the final minute of the half, Marcus NeSmith got in the score column with a three and Williams got in a layup moments before the horn sounded for half.

In the first half, SU held LYN scoreless from behind the arc with LYN going 0-12 from deep. Overall in the first, SU shot just under 44% and kept LYN to a 16% mark from the floor.

The large lead at the break was helpful for Shenandoah because Lynchburg came out of the break and went on a 9-0 run in the first 2:30 of the second. SU got back out to a large lead, 40-22, with another Makle three. With 12 minutes left to play Shenandoah took its largest lead of the game at 20 points, thanks to a pair of Joseph Baldwin free throws.

The two ODAC Hornets traded points for the next several minutes but Lynchburg was finally able to cut its deficit down to single-digits with a three with 4:39 left.

Lynchburg trailed by seven with under two minutes left but a converted and-one from Williams brought the game back to double-digits. Following the Willams'free throws, Shenandoah went on to make eight more in the final 65 seconds to seal the tournament win.

Jaylen Williams led all players with 21 points in the game. The guard was one rebound shy of a double-double. Coming off the bench, Kendrick Robinson brought in a season-high seven boards.
