Men's Basketball's Season Concludes in OT of ODAC Quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. - In the program's first trip to Salem Civic Center, the No. 8 Shenandoah University men's basketball team took top-seeded Randolph-Macon University to overtime, but lost 71-68 in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The Hornets (17-10) held a 10-point lead in the first half but seven second-half threes by the Yellow Jackets (23-3) helped force overtime. In overtime, R-MC went up by three with 11 seconds left as SU missed a three from the top of the key, as R-MC hung on and advanced to the semifinals.

RECAP
Randolph-Macon opened the postseason contest on a 6-0 run but on back-to-back possessions SU tied the game with threes from Jaylen Williams and Landon Russ. R-MC held a 12-10 lead with 15 minutes left in the half.

Five straight points from Marcus NeSmith propelled Shenandoah into a 15-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded immediately with a three to tie the game, 15-15. Nick Doyle's squad then went on a 10-0 run, taking the largest lead of the game. All 10 points during the run came from inside the arc and were scored by five separate Hornets. SU had a 25-15 lead with under seven minutes to play in the opening half.

Over the next six minutes, the Yellow Jackets cut into the Hornets' lead before hitting a game-tying jumper with 28 ticks left in the first. The two teams headed into the locker room tied at 27.

Beginning the second half it was the Evan Makle show for SU. Makle dropped the first eight points of the half for his squad, including a fading three in the corner. Following Makle's efforts, Russ nailed two free throws to give SU a 37-36 lead.

The teams once again traded leads for the middle stretch of the second half. With five minutes left, R-MC led by one but a layup from Nic Pullum and a three from Russ put SU up 56-53. Williams added on to the lead with a layup to put SU up by five with two minute left.

SU maintained a two-possession lead with 1:05 remaining but a three and a jumper in the paint by R-MC sent the game to overtime tied at 60.

Joseph Baldwin scored first to put SU up by two in OT but Randolph-Macon went on a 7-0 run to hold a 67-62 lead with under two minutes left. Four points from Williams and a jumper from Makle helped SU bring it to a one-point game. Randolph-Macon hit both free throws on a one-and-one opportunity, taking a 71-68 lead.

The Yellow Jackets defense forced a missed three from the Hornets just before the final horn, as they held on for the win.

Williams led Shenandoah with 20 points and seven rebounds. Makle added 15 points for Shenandoah, while Russ added 15. Williams ends his career as the ninth all-time scorer in program history.

Now through two seasons, head coach Nick Doyle now has 24 wins which is the most wins for a Shenandoah coach through two seasons since 2000-02.
